Our LED world

LED is short for Light Emitting Diode. The LED bulb consists of several light diodes. Diodes are small, electrical components which allow electricity to float through in one direction. Whenever electricity floats through a diode, light is generated. Light diodes are extremely small which makes it possible to integrate them in places where it previously hasn’t been possible to place a light before.

As an example to the above, we, in Loevschall A/S, have created a drawer light which can be placed in even the tiniest of drawers since the drawer light only is 6 mm tall. This could not be done without the development of diodes.

Compared to the old types of incandescent bulbs, diodes do not contain neither mercury nor glass or gasses when put under pressure. This makes them a very stable and durable solution which is less vulnerable from external influences. Previous the incandescent light experienced problems with overheating which was a significant and energy consuming problem in shops, forcing them to shut down the lights for longer periods in order to let them cool down. This is not a problem with the LED bulbs. Combined with the small and compact size it is easy to understand why the LED has become such an attractive solution for lamps and lights.

Integrated lenses

LEDs often have built-in lenses which breaks the light in order to make it possible to concentrate the light beam in one direction. If you put together 10-20 LEDs the result will be a strong and bright light beam, which is why most LEDs have fixtures integrated. These fixtures are often made of frosted plastic which helps to spread out the beam in order to divide it on to a bigger area.

LED and the good light

Even though the LED technology is innovative and solves a lot of the problems that we experienced with incandescent light, an LED bulb does not equal a good light. In the market for LED lights you can find a huge variety of LEDs in very different qualities. It is easy to buy a LED bulb with a very bad light – and in the same manner of speaking, it is easy to buy a LED bulb with an amazingly good light.

Some experience that when they buy an expensive lamp without any integrated light, they go out and buy a bulb themselves. Oftentthe result is not as one hoped. The bulb is usually brought a little too cheap and without any attention to lumen, lux or CRI-value. The final light from the expensive lamp with the unexpensive bulb becomes unappealing and bad and due to this, we are recommending to always buy lamps with integrated light.

Integrated light means that the light is already build into the lamp. Due to this, you do not have to go out and buy an additional bulb yourself. By choosing integrated light, you are assured that the quality of the light exceeds your expectations and contributes to enhancing your surroundings. You will typically find integrated light in spots, but we have also created a collection of designer pendants with integrated lighting – Noir By Loevschall.

In order to navigate in the various aspects that makes LED light good, you need to know a variety of technical specifications. We have collected the most important specs in our white paper about light. Here we write a bit more about what makes good light good – and that good light not necessarily always means the same.
